What is Obesity?

Obesity is a complex disease involving an excessive amount of body fat which has accumulated to the extent that it may have a negative effect on health. Body mass index (BMI) is a measurement in which body fat is measured on the basis of height and weight for adult men and women. It is used to measure used to determine whether a person is overweight or obese. Body mass index (BMI) is calculated by dividing a person’s weight (in KG) by their height (in meters squared).

A BMI of 25-29.9 is considered overweight, while a BMI of 30 or above is considered obese. Obesity is further classified as mild, moderate or severe based on the amount of body fat present.

The main cause of obesity is an energy imbalance, where the body takes in more energy from food than it burns off through physical activity. This can be due to lifestyle factors such as a sedentary lifestyle and poor dietary choices. Other causes of obesity include genetic factors, endocrine disorders and medications.

Obesity can lead to a number of health complications, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke and certain types of cancer. It has 3 different types of obesity. Treatment for obesity often involves making lifestyle changes, such as eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly. In rare cases, medication or surgery may also be required.

3 Different Types of Obesity

There are 3 different types of obesity. They are:

  1. Excess body fat around the waist (apple-shaped obesity): Apple-shaped obesity is more common in men and is linked with higher levels of LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and triglycerides, and lower levels of HDL (“good”) cholesterol.
  2. Excess body fat around the hips and thighs (pear-shaped obesity): Pear-shaped obesity is more common in women and is associated with a higher risk for type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
  3. A combination of both (mixed pattern obesity): Mixed pattern obesity is the most common type, affecting both men and women equally. It is characterized by high levels of LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood sugar, and low levels of HDL cholesterol.
