    On the ninth day of Navratri, also known as Vijayadashami or Dussehra, effigies of Ravana are burnt to signify the victory of good over evil. Navratri in 5 Different States: In South India, Navratri is known as Sarada Utsavam and is celebrated in honor of the Goddess Sarada.

People dress up in colorful traditional attire and dance to folk music in large groups. This is usually done at night, and goes on till the wee hours of the morning. The state of Gujarat comes alive during Navratri.

    Women dressed in their traditional best and men clad in kediyu and chorno (traditional Gujarati dresses), come together to perform Garba in open fields or temples. The atmosphere is further enlivened by the dhol (traditional drum) beats. One can also see people performing Garba in groups along with sticks (dandiya).

    Navratri in West Bengal

    The nine-day Navratri festival is celebrated with great gusto in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal. In West Bengal, the nine days of Navratri are observed as Mahalaya, Shashthi, Maha Saptami, Maha Ashtami, Maha Navami and Vijayadashami. Goddess Durga is worshiped in her various forms during these days and special pujas are performed. On Vijayadashami, huge processions are taken out with dedicated to Hindu goddess Durga and decorated to the worship. It is a time of feasting and merriment. On the tenth day, known as Dussehra, effigies of the demon king Ravana are burnt in massive public celebrations.

    During Navratri in 5 Different States, the streets resound with the sounds of drums and cymbals, and people can be seen dancing in traditional costumes. Delicious Bengali sweets are an integral part of the festival, and are enjoyed by all. Navratri is a truly magical time in West Bengal.

In Maharashtra, the nine nights of Navratri are celebrated with great fervor and devotion. People fast during these days and offer prayers to the nine forms of Goddess Durga.

    This nine day festival is celebrated with great fervor and enthusiasm all over the state and people from all walks of life participate in the festivities. On the tenth day, which is known as Vijayadashami, huge processions are taken out and effigies of Ravana are burnt to symbolize the victory of good over evil.
